National Association of Landscape Professionals and the National Collegiate Landscape Competition

Every year MSU Horticulture Club participates in the National Collegiate Landscape Competition organized by the National Association of Landscape Profesionals (formerly PLANET SCD).

MSU Horticulture Club Places Second in North America at PLANET Green Industry Competition

Congratulations to members of Horticulture Club that represented MSU at PLANET (Professional Land-care-Network) Student Career Days hosted by North Carolina State University last week. The four-day event consisted of educational workshops, a career fair, and 28 competitive events which have been termed the Landscape Olympics.  Team members competed against nearly 800 students representing65 colleges and universities from across the United States and Canada. MSU once again made a strong showing finishing in second place behind Brigham Young University - Idaho.  Other Big Ten schools competing included Penn State (11th), Ohio State (33rd), Illinois (59th), and Purdue (64th). 

The MSU team was composed of students from Horticulture and the Institute of Agricultural Technology Landscape and Nursery Management Program.  Team members included Cole Amstutz, Josh Beasley, Lindsay Daschner, Ben Harcey, Brian Gayheart, Josh Gleason, Clayton Karle, Brian Keuning, Jacqueline Kirouac, Ben Leonard, Wesley Raker, Neil Rion, Austin Sale, Lauren Sieloff, Morgan Temple, Keren Terry, Bethany Troy, Zach Van Dyke, Aaron Weaver, Preston Zoellner, and team coaches Marcus Duck and Brad Rowe. Faculty members Bridget Behe and Tom Fernandez also attended and assisted with the event.


Top scorers for MSU were Zach Van Dyke (447), Ben Harcey (285), Bethany Troy(261), Preston Zoellner (260), Cole Amstutz (258), and Ben Leonard (247). Among the 757 students competing, Zach placed first for the most total points scored by an individual.


While on the trip the team also visited the Biltmore Estate and Gardens in Asheville,Sarah Duke Gardens at Duke University, a green roof field production site of Xeroflor America in Durham, and the JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University. Team members worked diligently all year raising money to finance the trip through Horticulture Club activities such as their Spring Show.
