ABOUT MACHS
The MSU Hort Club is a charter member of the Association of Collegiate Branches of the American Society of Horticulture Science. The ACB is broken down into regional divisons and the MSU Hort Club belongs to the Mid American Collegiate Horticultural Society. MACHS is made up of collegiate horticulture clubs hailing from all over the 12 states that form the Mid-American division: Colorado, Illinios, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and of course Michigan!
The members of MACHS participate in an annual conference and competition that is held on the campus of the selected host university. The hosting club rotates annually and this year's competition took place at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa on October 14th-16th. Participants got to enjoy good food, including a cook out at the Iowa State Hort Farm, great guest speakers, and fun tours of local nurseries and arboreta.
As much as the conference is about networking with industry professionals and enjoying informative tours, there is also the three part competition which gives members a chance to utilize knowledge gained in their studies to demonstrate their skill in Herbaceous and Woody Plant ID, General Horiticultural Knowledge, and Plant Judging.
This event typically consists of a team that is chosen by the current year's club advisors with preference given first to officers, then it is opened up to the rest of the club based on club participation, meeting attendance, and experience. Cost per person is usually fairly low, but it depends on how far away the event is and how many people the club chooses to take.
